I’m typing this e-mail while perched on a tree stump at the entrance to a cave behind a waterfall. Over the torrents of wind and water, I can just barely hear the clicking of keys. I bet this is precisely where Churchill stood when he proclaimed Uganda “The Pearl of Africa”. How did I get here?

Mark Twain: “A thing long expected takes the form of the unexpected when at last it comes.” As usual, Twain was right on the money: Over the last 24 hours, Uganda , for me a place long expected, has taken the form of the unexpected. After one full day and one full night in this country, I’m both happy and sad to report that it is very different from the imaginary world I had cooked up in my head over the last 8 months.
